TUSC briefing: don’t wait for a national social care service, councils can act now!

Published on

The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) steering committee has published a briefing on social care policy, drafted by a recently-retired former UNISON organiser for social care workers, Dave Gorton.

With Andy Burnham dangling the promise of a national care service in order to carry out the demand of big business to abandon the pension triple lock – even as his social care agenda actually does nothing to lessen the influence of private equity firms and profiteering in the sector – the briefing lists examples of policies to change the situation in social care now which councils have the power to implement today, without the need for new national legislation, if there were councillors with the will to fight for them.

Comments on the briefing are welcome, including thoughts on what social care policy commitments could be sought from prospective candidates in the May 2027 local council elections – both those seeking to use one of the TUSC registered descriptions on the ballot paper and candidates from other parties – and can be sent to the TUSC National Election Agent, Clive Heemskerk, at [email protected]. ■
