Help us fight for local jobs and services in Bootle in the Sefton council by-election

The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) is standing the PCS trade unionist Graham Woodhouse in the Sefton council by-election in the borough's Derby ward on 7th November.

Graham's election agent, Pete Glover, a member of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) National Executive committee for Merseyside and Cheshire (personal capacity), has issued the following appeal for support:

Dear brothers and sisters,

At the by-election in Derby ward in Labour-run Sefton there is only one candidate with a track record of supporting the trade union movement: Graham Woodhouse, PCS north-west regional committee member. Graham is standing against the social devastation caused by the recession, government policies, and the council's abject failure to oppose any of this. I am writing to ask for your support for Graham.

Thousands of Bootle residents are hit by the bedroom tax. Labour in Sefton has cut £71 million from services, increased already-high service charges, and is closing another seven libraries. The Labour council is simply doing what the Tories tell it to do.

This opens the door for UKIP. As trade unionists we know the dangers of racism and division. Bootle has been leafleted regularly by UKIP warning us of 'hordes' of Bulgarians and Romanians entering the country. Derby ward is a key battleground for UKIP where their deputy leader lives and they polled 14% of the vote last time. The main parties including Labour are incapable of answering their lies.

The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) are building a fighting alternative for working-class people, backed by ordinary trade unionists, and nationally by the RMT and Bob Crow, along with community activists. Last year TUSC polled nearly 5,000 votes standing Tony Mulhearn for the directly-elected mayor of Liverpool (beating both the Tories and UKIP). Next year TUSC will stand over 600 candidates across England.

Graham Woodhouse is a strong candidate. He lives locally, is branch secretary for the PCS Highways Agency North West branch, a member of the PCS North West Regional Committee, and a member of the PCS Department for Transport Group Executive Committee.

Graham is pledged to make no financial gain if elected but instead will publicly publish all expenses and accounts.

In solidarity,

Peter Glover - TUSC election agent

How you can help Graham

Our budget for the campaign is £300, a fraction of the amount spent by the main parties and UKIP, but it still has to be raised from ordinary working class people, not big business backers. We are asking for individuals or union branches to make donations to this campaign.

Please make cheques payable to TUSC and send them to the TUSC national office address, TUSC, 17 Colebert House, Colebert Avenue, London E1 4JP, with a note saying this is a donation to the Bootle by-election campaign. Alternatively, you can make an online donation through the TUSC website, at http://www.tusc.org.uk/donate.php again indicating that this is for Graham's campaign.

Graham will be happy to address meetings on request. You can contact Graham on 07818-588803 or [email protected] If you would like us to send you some election leaflets, or you can help the campaign with leafleting, or display a window poster, let us know.

Graham Woodhouse and TUSC say:

  • Axe the bed tax and universal credit now
  • Build affordable council housing to lower rents and create jobs
  • Stop increased council charges for funerals and cremations!
  • Save our seven at-risk libraries! Stop the garden waste charges!
  • Defend local jobs and public services - stop all the cuts!
