Scotland 2021 - Build a socialist and trade union election challenge

The Scottish Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) steering committee has organised a conference on November 7 to prepare a socialist challenge for the Scottish parliament election in May 2021.

We are inviting trade unionists and trade union organisations, socialists and socialist organisations who are interested in helping to build that election challenge to take part.

If you would like to participate and/or your organisation would, please let us know.

TUSC was established in 2010 by the former general secretary of the RMT union Bob Crow, the Socialist Party, and other leading trade unionists and socialists.

Since then, TUSC has stood in hundreds of elections on a 100% anti-austerity and socialist platform. These elections include Westminster, Holyrood and local government contests.

TUSC and Scottish TUSC operate on a consensus basis. The Scottish TUSC steering committee is made up of the constituent organisations, the RMT and Socialist Party Scotland, individual NEC members of trade unions in a personal capacity, as well as branch secretaries of trade unions in Scotland.

The 2021 Scottish elections will take place in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as an onslaught on jobs, wages and working conditions in an unprecedented economic crisis.

All of the reasons for forming TUSC as an electoral vehicle for workers are relevant, even more so given the scale of the social and economic crisis. Neither the dominant SNP or the declining Scottish Labour Party have offered any respite from austerity, rising poverty and inequality.

In addition to these factors, the growing support for Scottish independence and a second independence referendum will be a dominant issue.

Scottish TUSC has since our formation supported the right to self-determination for Scotland, including campaigning for a Yes vote in 2014 and today for a second indyref. We support the fight for an independent socialist Scotland.

With the Tories at Westminster setting their face against indyref2, regardless of the result in May 2021, a mass working class movement for self-determination will have to be built to win democratic rights. Socialists and trade unionists will have a crucial role to play in such a movement.

For all of these reasons we believe building an electoral challenge to the main parties of cuts and capitalism is necessary. We'd like to invite you to take part in the conference on November 7. If your organisation would like to support Scottish TUSC and take part in the steering committee, also let us know.

There is a Facebook event for the November 7 conference @Scottish TUSC. The Zoom link will be there as well. You can also email us at [email protected]
